The Associate Veterinarian for the Zoo assists in managing all aspects of animal medical care and animal health management for the Audubon Zoo, while providing additional medical support for the Aquarium of the Americas, the Insectarium, the Freeport McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center, Audubon Louisiana Nature Center, and the Coastal Wildlife Network.  

To deliver on the Audubon mission, the Associate Veterinarian will: 

    Provide comprehensive health care for the animal collections of the Audubon Nature Institute in accordance with standards set forth by Audubon and noted in the Guidelines for Zoo Veterinary Medical Programs and Veterinary Hospitals of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians.  

    Candidate must maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming, including proper uniform standards, and comply at all times with Audubon standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations.

    Candidate must have the ability to establish and maintain effective, efficient and cooperative relationships with employees, senior administration, vendors and customers.  

    Candidate must be able to work effectively with minimal supervision and approach all encounters with employees in a friendly, service-oriented manner. 

    Enthusiastically participate in planning and executing a quality and entertaining experience for our members during the annual Zoobilation tour and other tours as they are scheduled.

    Candidate may serve as Audubon spokesman and must be comfortable with public speaking and addresses all forms of media.

    Efficiently respond to institute animal emergencies as needed.

    Assist with all aspects of the Animal Health Care Center and Commissary operations where needed.

    Work in a cooperative, supportive, and professional manner with all Audubon animal care staff when needed

including, but not limited to providing veterinary coverage and expertise support in collaboration at all Audubon facilities.

    Provide professional and medically appropriate healthcare to the animal collections of the Audubon Zoo in accordance with standards set forth by Audubon and noted in the Guidelines for Zoo Veterinary Medical Programs and Veterinary Hospitals of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians.  This medical care includes, but is not limited to:  diagnosis and treatment, preventative medicine, periodic exams, quarantine, occasional stranding response, triage and rehabilitation, proactive stress reduction, disease surveillance and containment, necropsy, and periodic review of diet and husbandry practices.

    Develop and maintain a communication system that ensures consistent animal health care between veterinary visits.

    Manage and maintain complete, accurate, and timely medical records consistent with professional standards through Audubon approved software, such as, but not limited to, ZIMS.

    Participate in the supervision, training, and evaluation of our Resident, Intern, preceptors and professional colleagues.

    Participate in incidental, emergency, and planned activities and networking support for local, regional and federal partners related to wildlife healthcare and field conservation.

    Endeavor to publish clinical outcomes and data in reputable journals.

    Conduct and/or cooperate with approved research projects.

    Participate in continuing education seminars and workshops as necessary to maintain appropriate standards of care and to sustain a license to practice in the state of Louisiana.

    Accept euthanasia as an acceptable method of animal management.

    Participate in local, regional, and international conservation projects in support of Audubon’s mission statement.

    Work in conjunction with Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine to develop and provide course materials, practical sessions, and lectures pertaining to zoo medicine.

    Assist with Pest Control efforts to ensure that pest management is in consideration of the live collection and the environment.

    Maintain all animal health care areas to or above industry standards, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance, organization, equipment care and maintenance, and hygiene.

    Assist with preparation and monitoring of annual budgets.

    Collaborate and support active pursuit of grants that support the Audubon mission.

Requirements

Experience: 

    Minimum of 3 years clinical experience in treating non-domestic animals, preferably at least 2 years in a zoological setting.

Education: 

    Graduate of an established program in veterinary medicine

Licensure/Certification:

    Maintain a license to practice veterinary medicine in Louisiana

    Board certification in the American College of Zoological Medicine (or eligibility) is preferred

    Must maintain a valid Louisiana driver’s license

    Negative TB test required

    Current Rabies series, Tetanus, COVID and Hep A/B vaccinations required
